Welcome to San Francisco!

Sept 26, 2013

So after spending about 20 hours in airports and on planes after the cancellation of our first flight to Toronto, incurring an eight hour wait til we could get another flight that wasn't packed and already oversold, we arrived at SFO at 11 pm local time, instead of 3 pm, therefore losing a few good hours of sightseeing/ preparing time. But flying in at night over San Francisco and seeing the lights 'almost' made up for the delay.

Still on Nova Scotia internal time, we ended up waking around 5 am, even tho we didn't get to our accommodations until 1 am. Took awhile to get our bearings and get sorted and plan for the day. It dawned clear and blue and warm. Perfection. We decided to go to Golden Gate park, a two block walk down from our accommodation - but first, a quick stop at Starbucks for breakfast. We then walked to the California Academy of Science, saw the awesome living reef, the albino alligator, some penguins, did a planetarium show/nap...lol. We went there first to pick up our San Fran citypass vouchers, giving us free admission and MUNI rides. Had lunch at the cafe, then decided to check out the Japanese Tea Gardens, only to discover that admission was $7, and if we could get up and get there between 9-10 am Friday, admission is free. Decided to do the Botanical Garden instead, as there is no free admission there. Spent about an hour there...it must be amazing in the summer months, but still quite nice in late. September. My fav...the fragrance garden...you haven't seen someone get so excited over rubbing the lemon verbena leaves and saying how the smell exactly like my L'Occitane verbena shower gel. I wanted to rub the leaves all over...lol.

Time to leave the park so we decided to head back to accommodation to pick up our jackets and regroup. Decided to take the muni back in...went to see Union Square, wandered a bit down the Main Street in Chinatown, which was so neat. Saw the Transamerican Pyramid building, the Sentinel building (AKA the American Zoetrope building, famous for directors working there, founded by Coppola and George Lucas. Saw Coit Tower from a distance, and maybe a glimpse of Golden Gate Bridge. Had pizza slices for supper then tiredness set in and back to rest and get ready for another exciting day. Tea garden, Fishermans Wharf, a tour over the bridge to Sausalito and Muir Woods, hopefully the 'Painted Ladies', Lombard street and, if I have my way, the BiRite Creamery for, apparently, some of the BEST ice cream in America! (note - we DID NOT get to the BiRite Creamery at all...too out of the way...sigh)
